From August 4th to 6th, the Kamloopa Powwow Society hosted their 42nd annual Kamloopa Powwow, an event known as one of the largest gatherings of Indigenous culture in Western Canada. With an estimated 20,000 people attending over the three-day gathering, the event honored and celebrated the richness of Indigenous culture and heritage. As proud sponsors of the Kamloopa Powwow, New Afton gifted employees with 20 pairs of weekend passes, 10 of which were generously donated by the Kamloopa Pow Wow Society.
For a chance to win a weekend pass, employees were required to correctly answer a skill testing question about our Stkémlupsemc te Secwepemc Nation (SSN) Indigenous partners. Those who answered correctly were entered into the draw, with weekend passes distributed by random selection.
With the event beginning each day with Grand Entry, guests were provided with a stunning display of dancers in their full regalia, representing many nations and tribes from across Canada and the United States. Some of the events over the weekend highlighted Indigenous dance competitions from a multitude of categories and age groups, group drumming contests and a Princess Pageant. There were also vendors booths and food stands around the Powwow Arbour offering Indigenous and other clothing, accessories, jewelry, merchandise and a variety of food choices. The Kamloopa Powwow is a significant cultural event to behold and New Gold looks forward to supporting next year’s event.
