New Gold recognizes that strengthening communities goes beyond the site itself and involves backing programs and partnerships that create a lasting impact on people’s lives.
That’s why, through the Community Investment Program, New Afton contributed over $17,000 toward new equipment for a renovated group and assessment space at Interior Health’s Mental Health and Substance Use facility in Kamloops.
This dedicated space is now used to provide enhanced life-skills programming and essential services to individuals living with mental health challenges. These programs go far beyond teaching daily tasks; they foster independence, build resilience, and offer emotional and social support in a hands-on, practical setting.

“With the addition of the new equipment, our clients now have a dedicated space to learn vital skills that support independent living, such as cooking, housekeeping, or maintaining a schedule,” shared Jessica Mensinger, Interior Health’s Clinical Operations Director. “It is a safe and structured environment to help them build confidence and prepare them for the real world.”
The updated space is designed for both learning and assessment, enabling occupational therapists, recreational therapists, and life skills coaches to work more effectively with clients, many of whom previously lacked access to such high-level care.
“We would not be able to provide these services in a dedicated space without New Gold,” said Jessica. “Previously, we relied on various locations with different amenities in the community. Now, we can offer the full scope of support and services to our clients in one convenient location, close to our other mental health and substance use services.”
By supporting this initiative, New Afton is helping create a sustainable, community-based approach to mental health that empowers individuals and strengthens the fabric of care in our region.
