Kamloops Music Collective: Rising from the Ashes

Following the loss of nearly 100 instruments and other music equipment after a fire last summer, the New Afton Mine provided the Kamloops Music Collective (KMC) with $15,458 to purchase replacements.

The KMC operated out of the Kamloops United Church, which suffered considerable damage in August 2024 as a result of the blaze. The instruments and equipment—collected over decades—were essential for nine programs and workshops serving 405 participants. The loss threatened to disrupt over 27,000 hours of music education.

“I’ve been part of KMC for over seven years, and I’ve witnessed firsthand the life-changing impact of inclusive access to quality music education,” said Megan Alpaugh, KMC Executive Director. “It’s an honour to help shape children’s lives through the power of music.”

One program especially close to Megan’s heart is the Whole Note Program, which provides students with access to instruments, year-round private lessons, and scholarships for the Kamloops Interior Summer School of Music program.

“Last year alone, we awarded over $22,000 in bursaries and scholarships, and the need continues to grow as families face rising costs and we’re incredibly grateful to New Afton’s Community Investment Program for supporting us in our time of need,” added Megan. “Their generosity is helping us replace our drums—a cornerstone of our programs—and their belief in our mission fuels our commitment to bringing music education to every youth in Kamloops. Music has the power to transform lives, and together, we’re making that transformation a reality.”

New Afton’s support ensures that the KMC can continue to nurture the musical talents and passions of the Kamloops community, ensuring that the spirit of music thrives despite the challenges endured.

“At KMC, I feel like I’m with people who really love and care about me, all of us kids have so much fun—it’s like we’re in a completely different world!” said Olivia, a KMC student. “I was at musical theatre camp when the fire started, and even though I felt safe and cared for, I was really sad about everything we lost. It makes me happy to know there are people who care about KMC as much as we kids do.”

The KMC is a registered charitable organization dedicated to supporting the music ecosystem in our community. They offer year-round music programming and encourage participation in music-making opportunities in Kamloops. Additionally, the KMC collaborates with local music educators and other arts organizations to build strong programs that contribute to the musical vibrancy of Kamloops.
